What are the eligibility criteria that need to be fulfilled in order to take admission in BHMS in India?

Candidate must have passed 10+2 higher secondary examination from an Indian university board.

  • 12 years of study in which last 2 years of study must consist of passing in physics, chemistry and biology that includes practical tests in each subject.
  • Passing in English subject is compulsory.

Or

Passing pre-medical or pre-professional examination (NEET) with physics, chemistry, biology and English (theory and practical tests) subjects is compulsory.

Candidate should have reached the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the BHMS course.

Candidates with physical impairments like blindness, dumbness, deafness etc. shall not be admitted to BHMS degree course.

What is the difference between BHMS and MBBBS syllabus?

Full form of MBBS is Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

With the degree of MBBS you can practice with Allopathic medicines in order to treat diseases.

Whereas, with the degree of BHMS you can practice with Homoeopathic medicines to treat patients.

The course duration and syllabus taught in BHMS is almost same to MBBS. The only difference between MBBS and BHMS is the method of treatments, medicines (pharmacology) and principles to be followed.

Can BHMS doctor practice Allopathy?

With the degree of BHMS one is not legally qualified to practice with Allopathic medicines.

But in some of the states there is a bridge course introduced (for Ayurvedic, Homoeopathic, Unani, Siddha etc.) which trains in Allopathic pharmacology and certifies to practice accordingly in that state.

Can BHMS doctor do surgery?

During the 5½ years of course duration students are being taught the subjects like Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology, Preventive and social medicine, Forensic medicine, Anatomy, Physiology etc.

A homoeopath is being legally registered by Central council of Homoeopathy (located in Delhi) with BHMS degree.

That means they are recognized as a qualified homoeopathic medical practitioner.

These degrees in homoeopathy can be BHMS/DHMS/MD(HOM)/DMS/BMS/LCEH etc.

So, the answer is YES, a homoeopath can perform minor surgical procedures.

A homoeopathic physician can,

  1. Practice in Homoeopathic medicines.
  2. Open his own private clinic.
  3. Can provide IV Infusion and Oxygen for emergency conditions (according to central council act).
  4. Can do minor surgical procedures like stitch the wounds or dressings etc.
  5. Can write any type of medical/fitness certificate to their patients.
  6. Can serve in government hospitals, private hospitals, local trusts or organizations.
  7. According to Indian evidence Act section no. 45 a homoeopath can give his expert opinion regarding inquest (a judicial investigation to ascertain the facts related to an accident).

What is the maximum duration for completion of BHMS course?

From the date of admission, it is 11 years that includes compulsory internship for 12 months you must complete your course.

Can BHMS degree course be studied externally (distance learning)?

No, BHMS course is a full term academic medical degree course.

Candidate is being trained in medical skills throughout these 5½ years.

Students must attend 75% of all the theory, practical and clinical classes in order to appear in the University examination.

Minimum 75% of attendance is compulsory

  • Every admitted candidate in the first BHMS will have to pass through the Thalassemia test and Blood grouping test.

What are the career opportunities after BHMS?

  • You can open your own private clinic.
  • You can get a job as a medical officer in Government hospitals/private hospitals, local trusts or organizations, private clinics.
  • Become a lecturer after getting master degree in BHMS.

You can get Master degree of any stream (science, commerce or arts) as you have studied in 12th science.
